With sadness

Rob Smith, a long-time Annapolis Strider, died on February 4 after a month long treatment for leukemia.  He had a great sense of humor and was a friend to many of us in the running community.  For many years, you could find him on Saturdays during football season volunteering to park cars at the USNA Stadium at the Cedar Park gate for the benefit of the Parole Rotary Club.  Rob was a former Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and joined the law firm of Franch & Jarashow in the early 1990’s that became known as Franch, Jarashow & Smith.  Rob was active in civic affairs through the Parole Rotary Club.  He was an avid runner and member of the Annapolis Striders.  Rob is survived by his wife, Sherrie Burton Smith, and his children, Lindsay and Andrew.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, 171 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland  21401.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to Rotary Club of Parole (Annapolis), P O Box 6327, Annapolis, MD 21401-0327. parole-rotary.org

The Southern Maryland Community Network Inc. New Year’s Day 5K Run/ Walk will be held Wednesday, January 1, 2020 in Prince Frederick, MD.

Southern Maryland Community Network is a non-profit mental health agency serving the Southern Maryland area.  Our Annual 5K Resolution Run/Walk helps raise money for our community mental health programs.  This fundraising event also helps us to create awareness about mental health in our community.  A portion of the proceeds also benefits the Erica Weems Scholarship Fund.  Erica was an employee of SMCN and was tragically killed in a car accident in August of 2007.

SAFETY REMINDER

A reminder for runners to wear reflective gear and running lights, and to always, always be aware that drivers aren’t looking for runners.

12/03/2019 at 6:23pm: Fatal Collision:  Preliminary investigations indicate the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe, Patrick Tackney, 48, of Annapolis, was leaving the driveway of a group of businesses at 1950 West Street to turn right, westbound on West Street. At the same time the pedestrian, Ernest Powell, 65, of Annapolis, was walking on the sidewalk eastbound along West Street across the same driveway. The Chevrolet struck Mr. Powell and then turned into the parking lot of the business at 1952 West Street. Mr. Powell sustained serious, life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Mr. Powell died from his injuries. Witnesses prevented the driver, Tackney, from leaving the scene of the accident. Tackney was arrested and charged with negligent manslaughter, driving while impaired and multiple additional related charges. Tackney is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bond.
