Annapolis Striders Training/Education Update from Bob Moseley,
VP of Training and Education
|
|
Our training programs continue. Those who participated in the 5K training program (target race Women’s Running Festival 5K and Run After the Women 5K) will get the chance to put their training to good use this Saturday at the race(s). The A-10 program (target race A-10 on 8/25) has 53 runners in training and the Junior Striders (target race John Wall 1-Mile on 7/13) has 37 Junior Striders in training.
The 2024 Moore’s Marines Marathon Training program started last Saturday with a 10 mile run and progression continues this week with a 12-miler. We were joined last week by Alex Hetherington, Director of the Marine Corps Marathon, who ran with us, answered questions about the race and gave out some MCM bling to those who were present (I still have a few extras available). Currently, we have 73 runners signed up for the program and we are looking forward to the next 17 weeks leading up to MCM/other marathons. Our FB page is up and almost running (I plan on posting something very soon) and all participants are invited to join in and be part of the conversation. If you still haven’t signed up for the training but would like to do so, registration is still open; you won’t be required to do any “make-up” runs but should be ready to jump in right away.
For those who are training for the marathon, one of the questions that always comes up is “How fast should I do my long runs?” Conventional running wisdom states that the proper pace is about 1 to 1/12 minutes per mile slower than marathon pace. While this is the conventional wisdom, many runners don’t follow it and tend to run the long run at a pace that is not optimal for success. For example, if the goal is to run a sub-4 hour marathon, the recommended long run pace would be about 10 – 10:30 per mile. While this may seem incredibly slow for experienced runners, the overall intended training goal (to build endurance) is better reached by running slower. Experienced marathoners, who are more focused on pace and who may incorporate speed work into their training, may be challenged by this approach but the research has shown that it is a more effective way to build endurance and prevent overtraining/injury. Here’s a link to an article from “Marathon Handbook” that talks about this in more detail: Marathon handbook link
