Wrap up from our October 8th Annapolis Striders Social:
We met at the Vida Taco Bar Severna Park, 541 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park, MD 21146. Vida Taco Bar is a Farm to Taco establishment. They source locally when they can to provide fresh and exciting tacos with a seasonal rotation. What a great evening to be outdoors with fellow runners and friends. There were 11 of us throughout the night enjoying food, beverages and good conversation. Thank you and shout out to everyone who came out and to Jake Munger, General Manager, for reserving outdoor patio seating.
Stay safe and well. We’ll see you in November.

NOVEMBER
Hello fellow Annapolis Striders,

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that the 4th Annual Wreaths Across America Two Rivers Run will not be held this year, at least not as we had originally planned and hoped for.

While the planned run date is still three months away, it takes significant planning and preparation to get ready. And if 2020 has taught us anything so far it is that we have no way of knowing what is going to happen in the next three months. Therefore I have made the decision to convert the run/walk into a “Do it yourself 5k (or one mile) virtual fun run/walk.” So on Saturday November 7th (or a date near there) get bundled up and go out for a run/walk.  Take a selfie of your “race” and we’ll collect them and post the pictures virtually. This way we can all honor our veterans while staying safe and healthy.

For an informal event like this there will obviously be no registration fee. Instead I hope that you will continue to honor our veterans by purchasing a wreath.
Last year our goal for was 1,000 wreaths which equals raising $15,000. I know we can do this!  In fact, I know we can do even better this year!

October 10th-17th The Pacing for Parkinson’s will hold a virtual race. Complete whatever distance you would like at whatever time you would like and report your distance to the organizers so they can see how far the group can go together, apart, in the name of finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
A note from Annapolis Strider Ashley Reed:
“I’m running the virtual Baltimore10K race to raise money in honor of my close friend Evan Thomas, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s.” The Pacing 4 Parkinson’s group is aimed at fundraising for the Neurology and Movement Disorder center at Johns Hopkins Hospital and has virtually focused on the period 10-17 October for their effort in 2020.  See Ashley’s posting on FB that :”Evan helped start my love for running over 15 years ago and helped coach me from running a 5K all the way up to a marathon. I sincerely credit Evan with helping foster my love of long distance running!” See also the Pacing 4 Parkinson’s web site and learn how to contribute to the valuable Parkinson’s research efforts for a cure. Plus: Annapolis Striders who contribute will receive the equally valuable stress management device from Evan (just drop him a note at Evan’s email).

August social wrap up-we had our Annapolis Striders Social outside at the Annapolis Market House, 25 Market Space, City Dock, Annapolis. What a nice downtown venue and great weather to boot. If you haven’t been to the Annapolis Market House lately, we encourage you to stop by. The best view in town, great food and service. We had approximately 15 members join us including a few who took a break from their run to say hello. Thank you and shout out to Keith Buchard, for reserving our space!!

September 10, 6:30-8:30pm, our Annapolis Striders Social will meet outside on the patio at the Italian Market of Annapolis, 126 Defense Highway, Annapolis. We have reservations for 15. Seating is first come, first serve outside. We hope you will join us; eat, drink, shop and enjoy!!
Help Carrye Massey celebrate 5 years coordinating the Annapolis Striders socials!! Thank you, Wilbur and Geraldine Lubrano, for reserving our space.

NOVEMBER
new

We will be practicing the following contact-free safeguards that will provide reasonable prevention of exposure to the virus and allow for a safe experience for all participants.

1 – Greenbury Point will be restricted to only runners and limited race management personnel. No support crews nor spectators allowed.  A volunteer will be stationed on the main road verifying cars and runners.
2 – Screening of all participants upon arrival at Greenbury Point will be documented.
  •         As runners arrive and while still in their cars, their names will be verified against the registration list.
  •         They will be asked whether they have experienced COVID 19 symptoms or been around anyone who has in the last two weeks. Answers will be recorded.
  •       Their temperature will be taken. Anyone with a temperature above 100.4 F will be refused access to Greenbury Point and instructed to leave and to contact their physician and seek medical advice.
3 – Runners will only be allowed to use Portable Toilets and hand washing stations provided, not the facilities at Greenbury Point.
  •         Runners will be required to use the Portable Hand Washing Stations prior to and after using the Portable Toilets.
  •         Portable Toilets will be cleaned – sprayed with disinfectant – after every use.
4 – Contact Free Race procedures
  •         Runners will be required to cover their mouth and nose, with a face cover (Buff, mask, etc.), at all times prior to start and immediately upon finishing.
  •         Runners will be instructed to exercise social distancing at all times, even while running.
  •         Runners will stay to the right of the path/trail while running and announce themselves when intending to pass another runner.

  •         Race packets contact free. Prior to the race, packets will be laid out in an area separate from one another, with only one person at a time allowed to retrieve a packet.

  •         No aid will be provided to runners. They will be required to provide their own aid from their vehicles during the race.
  •         Vehicles will be parked end to end to ensure social distancing.
  •         A corral and wave system will be used
  •    10 runners at a time will line up in a corral with lines separating         individuals into six feet sections.
  •    Runners will start one at a time separated by 10 seconds each.

  •         Event timing will be provided without any contact necessary by runners.

  •         Awards will be mailed or laid out in an area similar to race packets separate from one another, with only one person at a time allowed to retrieve an award.
Other contact-free safeguards may be established so that we can still hold the event.

JUNE THROUGH SEPTEMBER

right-arrow-icon3.gif  Great American 5000 June 14th-September 14th

The Great American 5000 is a virtual team run from San Francisco to New York – and everywhere in between! Assemble your crew of up to 12 or up to 24 people, run a cumulative 24 hours a day, and start to chip away at the 5,000k (3,107-mile) journey. An online map will track each group’s virtual progress across the country and a leaderboard will display the standings each day, with groups in open, female, and co-ed categories.

Your team has until September 14 to complete the 5,000k trek – that’s as few as 33.4 miles per day for your team (1.4 for each individual)!
Run, walk, hike – it can all count towards your team’s mileage.

And you can make your achievement mean something even more by donating and helping raise funds for Feeding America, our official Race Charity. Additionally, Events DC will donate and additional 10% of local race registrations to DC based Martha’s Table.

Fingers crossed that the races are held.

right-arrow-icon5.gif  Great American 5000 June 14th-September 14th

President, Eva Coale

Message to our Members
June 3, 2020

I know everyone is anxious to resume some sort of normal. For the moment, things are heading in the right direction: stores and restaurants reopening, small group gatherings, etc. The Board met last to discuss upcoming races and training. Below is where we currently are.

Training
Based on the current guidelines, we are not able to offer in person training. (Our group size exceeds the maximum allowed.) We will post the training schedules on the Annapolis Striders website so that everyone will be able to prepare for races.

Champ Series/Iron Man
We do not want members’ streaks to come to an end because of health concerns created by the current pandemic. Last night, the Board made the decision to suspend 2020 Iron Man so that long running streaks may continue. This does not mean we have cancelled the series.   We will have champ series races if and when possible.

We will continue to reevaluate and update members on the status of future events as the situation evolves and we receive more guidance from public health officials and local government.

Stay healthy!
Eva

Membership management transitioned to RunSignup

As if you haven’t been blasted with enough emails already, here’s one last mention that we have moved our membership registration from Active to RunSignup.  We hope the email instructions for claiming your account weren’t too intimidating.

While the method can be quirky if you have multiple RunSignup accounts and used nicknames or different email addresses, for most people it is actually quite easy:  just click the Claim Account link and when prompted either create a RunSignup account or sign in to your existing one.  Then follow the prompts to claim your account.

Down the road RunSignup will be used for certain races as well.  For those that offer special member pricing, like Championship Series races where members pay less than non-members, your membership will be automatically recognized and you will be given the member rate.  RunSignup will also be used for no-cost registration for training programs that are free to members.

We appreciate you!  And we appreciate you taking the time to claim your account.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Jeff Carlson.

Due to the continuing public health threat of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Annapolis Striders has made the decision to cancel the 2020 Annapolis 10 Mile Run. Although we have not opened registration for the 2020 event, there are some runners that deferred from 2019 to 2020 and we will provide registration details for those deferred runners later.
We have made the decision to cancel after careful deliberation, knowing that our foremost responsibility is to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our participants, our volunteers, our broader running community, and society at large. The current situation in the United States and throughout the world is one of disruption and uncertainty. We feel that moving forward with plans for a 4,000 person race is not aligned with what our government, medical experts, and society is asking us to do. While painful to do knowing the legacy that surrounds this event, we feel it is the responsible action to take in light of what is going on in the world around us.
We thank you for your patience and kindness during this difficult period. We hope you all remain safe and healthy and we look forward to gathering with you in Annapolis in August 2021.
