Congratulations on a successful run on Sunday, February 23 at the
2025 Maryland RRCA
Club Challenge 10M!
For those who did not stay for the awards ceremony, full results are posted on the race website linked below.
RRCA Club Challenge 10M – Howard County Striders
There were a total of 16 clubs represented at the race. Kent Island and the Eastern Shore combine to form a single team. A few accomplishments of which you should be aware are the team results. As a Co-ed Team, we placed 8th of 13 teams (improving from 9 of 12 in 2024). The women placed 10th of 13 teams (maintaining 10th of 14 in 2024). The men took 9th of 15 teams (improving from 10th of 14 teams in 2024). Although we did not have enough runners to compete in the under 40 women and men categories, we did place 8th of 9 in women’s masters, 7th of 9 in men’s masters, 10th of 10 in female grand masters, and 5th of 13 in male grand masters.
Our fastest runners were Scott Koehler (1:00:22) and Nicole Dawson (1:22:20) closely followed by Katharine Ahrens (1:22:23). Way to go!
Thank you to our volunteers as well (Karsten Brown, Denise Hyde, George Banker,
Juanique (Missy) Harris, and Alan Kasmer). I hope to see everyone next year when the gym will (probably) be fully open. Below are links to the photos taken by Karsten Brown, Denise Hyde, George Banker and Ben Sussman Photography.

The Annapolis Striders’ 5K Training groups are a great service to the community, a good recruiting tool, and a nice way to connect with new runners. Currently, we offer programs in the fall and spring, 3 days a week, to help new or returning runners get in shape for Striders’ races. We are eager to build our coaching group for the long term and are in search of people who would be willing to coach
1-3 days a week during our training series. To be a coach, you must get certified by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) through one of their online or in-person 2-day workshops. If you successfully complete the training and coach for us, the Annapolis Striders will reimburse you for the training. For more information, please contact Laura Amin at laura.amin66@gmail.com.

Annual Awards
Your Awards Committee and Board have just wrapped up the 2024 Annual Awards, and the results will be announced at our Annual Meeting. Now it’s time to start thinking about our 2025 awards!
As we go through the year, see if anyone you know meets the general requirements and specific criteria for any of our awards. If so, gather all supporting information so you can easily nominate them at the end of the year. We even accept self nominations for consideration!
For more information on the award categories, general nomination requirements, and specific awards criteria, check out the Annual Awards on the Striders website.

B&A Trail Half Marathon Training: Training began the week of 12/30, with the 1st group/long run on 1/4/25. 73 runners are now registered; we usually have about 30 folks who actually attend. If you are interested in joining us, stop by on Saturday mornings at 0730 at Jones Station. We are doing long runs of about 12-14 (or longer for our marathoners), so if you need some company, you’ve got it!
Something to think about: Some (actually, many, in my experience) runners talk a good game about strength training but in the end, not all follow through on the sentiment. Here’s a short article that provides some insights into the impact that weight training can have on your running results.
According to the latest research, runners should lift heavy.
The “Tortoise and the Hare” taught us that slow and steady wins the race. But does that apply to runners hitting the gym? While there’s no one-size-fits-all prescription for resistance training, a recent study revealed why you may want to try slower, heavier lifts in your next session: “Why Strength Training Won’t Magically Make You a Better Runner.” Turns out, lifting above 90% of your one-rep max was especially good at boosting neuromuscular efficiency and tendon stiffness, leading to improved running economy and maximal aerobic speed. So go ahead and load up the barbell with heavy weight and press for a slow, controlled, and intense lift (after a proper warmup and with good supervision, of course). Lifting may make you faster, but the article also challenges the popular notion that strength training is key for injury prevention. The article notes that while strength training can be helpful for novice runners getting their bodies adjusted to training, more advanced runners may increase their risk of injury by overworking their bodies. To avoid that problem, you can learn: “How to Balance Running and Weightlifting.” Prioritizing compound lifts like squats and deadlifts can improve your hip stability for a safer run. Just be sure to limit your heavy days to 2 or 3 times a week to avoid overtaxing your muscles.

This low-key program will guide the participants from a base of 6 miles up to a long run of 14 miles in 12 weeks. The goal will be for all who complete the program to be able to complete the B&A Trail Half Marathon or an alternative half marathon around the same timeframe.
