B&A Trail Marathon & Half-Marathon recap!

Sunday, March 30th, 2025

Thank you to all our Annapolis Striders who took part in the 34th annual B&A Trail Marathon and 30th annual B&A Trail Half-Marathon back on March 30th, whether you were there as a runner, a volunteer, or both! We had a terrific turnout and a very successful event under the care of second-year race director (& recent Annapolis Striders Volunteer of the Year award recipient) Tom Lyden and his amazing volunteer crew.

Michael Mbagu of Baltimore (2:42:01) and Alisha Zespy of Crofton (3:13:27) endured a relatively warm morning to take the top spots in the marathon, with Alisha being our top Striders woman as well; we believe Stephen Thursby (3:41:16) was our top male Strider in the full. Jack Mantell of Newtonville, MA (1:14:42) edged out fellow Massachusettsan Conrad Davis for the half-marathon men’s win, with Elkridge’s Caroline Bauer (1:22:36) taking the women’s half title. Alan Kasmer (1:16:00, 5th overall) and Samantha Cole (1:43:36) are believed to be the top Strider finishers.

Full results can be found both on Maryland Timing and on RunSignup, and Enduro Photo uploaded a few thousand race photos, downloadable for free!

John Wall Memorial One Mile Track Run

Championship Series Race #4

Saturday, June 28th, 2025

Severna Park High School

***  REGISTRATION IS OPEN! ***

The 44th annual John Wall Mile returns to Severna Park High School on

Saturday, June 28th, 2025, and as we know virtually all of you are capable of running and/or walking one mile, we hope to see a lot of you there! Those of you who signed up for the full 2025 Championship Series or our new Shorter Races Bundle at the beginning of the year are already entered in the Wall Mile, but online registration is now open for all others at just $10 for Striders members and $15 for non-members by June 25th. All are welcome to take part, regardless of pace; the event takes place with separate heats based on estimated finish time, progressing from slower to faster, so you’ll be out on the track with runners of a similar pace. So please join us! We could use some volunteers on race morning too; e-mail JohnWallMile@annapolisstriders.org if you can help.

ANNAPOLIS STRIDERS RUNNER EDUCATION AND

TRAINING

Annapolis Striders membership is required to participate in these training programs. There is no fee for the training programs but you must register.

Keep an eye on this section for announcements about training programs!

Annapolis Striders Training/Education

Update from Bob Moseley,

VP of Training and Education

Upcoming Training Programs: We have 2 training programs preparing to open for runners that some of you may be interested in. Our 5K Training program will be focused on training for the women’s Distance Festival, which takes place on July 12 and our 10K program is focused on training for the Dawson’s 10K, which occurs on June 15. Plenty of space for all interested; check out the Annapolis Striders website for the exact training dates and additional information.

Coaching Call: We are always looking for coach/mentors for our other training programs, such as the 5K, 10K, Jr. Striders and marathon groups; we have a particular need for a Lead Coach for the Jr. Striders. If you’d like to step into coaching and are interested, give me a shout. If you are experienced/RRCA-certified (or certified via another program, such as UESCA) or are interested in becoming certified, we can help pay for that training as well.

News you can use: While many of us strive to run our races as fast as possible, an inordinate focus on fast results doesn’t always produce a happy ending; injuries, bad weather, poor race management, etc. can end up throwing us off of our game and produce the opposite result of what we were anticipating. This article from “Six Minute Mile” provides some interesting insights into a different approach to training that may result in some unexpected benefits.

Why finishing the race matters more than finishing first

The tortoise taught us in elementary school that slow and steady often wins the race. Because every simple concept seems to generate a complicated way to describe it, we share with you the term “ergodicity.” A good explanation of this concept and a real-life example is in this new piece: “The Key To Success In Running Is Ergodicity (Or, Why The Fastest Usually Doesn’t Win).” The core idea, as author Luca Dellanna puts it, is that “Catastrophic losses absorb all future gains,” meaning avoiding game-ending disasters like injury or burnout might be more crucial than constantly chasing peak performance. Running in a way that delivers consistent, predictable results year after year just might be your best bet for long term success. We see this endurance-first philosophy in action with elite athletes like ultrarunning phenom Courtney Dauwalter. As noted in this Run247 article, “Courtney Dauwalter ‘hoping to show up with all my marbles in the right places’ for Cocodona 250,” a huge part of her success in grueling events involves mastering the long game and surviving the deep mental challenges, or the “pain cave” as she calls it. Ensuring she’s one of the last ones standing is key. Many observers believe that Courtney has the potential to beat all other runners in that upcoming race – male and female – thanks to her incredible motor and endurance strategy. If you want a deeper dive into ergodic running and how consistency trumps speed, check out the full post on Six Minute Mile website.

See you on the road/trail!

Saturday, June 14th, 2025

The Crofton Kiwanis Club and Foundation are holding their annual community 10K and 5K races for Saturday, June 14th. The race starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Crofton Country Club. The certified 10K course includes a great tour around our tree-lined community with some challenging hills and is a good tune-up for fall marathon training or even first time 10K participants. The 5K course goes completely around Crofton Parkway. All profits from these races are put towards the many community charities that the Crofton Kiwanis Foundation supports.
