The Great American 5000 is a virtual team run from San Francisco to New York – and everywhere in between! Assemble your crew of up to 12 or up to 24 people, run a cumulative 24 hours a day, and start to chip away at the 5,000k (3,107-mile) journey. July Status

The Board met last night to discuss upcoming races and training.  Below is where we currently are.

Training

Based on the current guidelines, we are not able to offer in person training.  (Our group size exceeds the maximum allowed.)  We will be posting the training schedules on the Annapolis Striders website so that everyone will be able to prepare for races.

Champ Series

The Board made the decision to discontinue scoring the series for 2020 and to not have awards for this year since we will not have the full series of races.  This does not mean we have cancelled the races in the series.   We will have champ series races if and when possible.

We will not be refunding the Champ Series registration fee or deferring to 2021.  We have had one Champ Series race in 2020 and intend to have more.

Races

John Wall Mile – postponed

We are working on a new venue that is better suited for timing and social distancing.  That being said, when we have the race, we will be limiting the participants to those registered for the Champ Series.  Watch the E-Streak and website for updates.

Endless Summer – TBD

We have not been able to obtain a permit.  If not permit is received prior to July 18th, the race will be postponed.

Dog Days – cancelled  ☹

We were unable to obtain a permit for this race.

B&A half/full marathon premiums

We will be scheduling a Saturday or Sunday morning in the near future for a drive by pick up.  Details to be provided once a date is set.

We will continue to reevaluate and update members on the status of future events as the situation evolves.

Stay healthy!

Eva

 Great American 5000 June 14th-September 14th

The Great American 5000 is a virtual team run from San Francisco to New York – and everywhere in between! Assemble your crew of up to 12 or up to 24 people, run a cumulative 24 hours a day, and start to chip away at the 5,000k (3,107-mile) journey. An online map will track each group’s virtual progress across the country and a leaderboard will display the standings each day, with groups in open, female, and co-ed categories.

Your team has until September 14 to complete the 5,000k trek – that’s as few as 33.4 miles per day for your team (1.4 for each individual)!
Run, walk, hike – it can all count towards your team’s mileage.

And you can make your achievement mean something even more by donating and helping raise funds for Feeding America, our official Race Charity. Additionally, Events DC will donate and additional 10% of local race registrations to DC based Martha’s Table.

Message to our Members
June 3, 2020

I know everyone is anxious to resume some sort of normal. For the moment, things are heading in the right direction: stores and restaurants reopening, small group gatherings, etc. The Board met last to discuss upcoming races and training. Below is where we currently are.

Training
Based on the current guidelines, we are not able to offer in person training. (Our group size exceeds the maximum allowed.) We will post the training schedules on the Annapolis Striders website so that everyone will be able to prepare for races.

Champ Series/Iron Man
We do not want members’ streaks to come to an end because of health concerns created by the current pandemic. Last night, the Board made the decision to suspend 2020 Iron Man so that long running streaks may continue. This does not mean we have cancelled the series.   We will have champ series races if and when possible.

We will continue to reevaluate and update members on the status of future events as the situation evolves and we receive more guidance from public health officials and local government.

Stay healthy!
Eva

Membership management transitioned to RunSignup

As if you haven’t been blasted with enough emails already, here’s one last mention that we have moved our membership registration from Active to RunSignup.  We hope the email instructions for claiming your account weren’t too intimidating.

While the method can be quirky if you have multiple RunSignup accounts and used nicknames or different email addresses, for most people it is actually quite easy:  just click the Claim Account link and when prompted either create a RunSignup account or sign in to your existing one.  Then follow the prompts to claim your account.

Down the road RunSignup will be used for certain races as well.  For those that offer special member pricing, like Championship Series races where members pay less than non-members, your membership will be automatically recognized and you will be given the member rate.  RunSignup will also be used for no-cost registration for training programs that are free to members.

We appreciate you!  And we appreciate you taking the time to claim your account.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Jeff Carlson.

Streak logo

The Streak wants to hear from you! There may not be any races going on right now, but we’re sure you still have stories to share. What was your first race? Favorite race? Most interesting running experience? How have you adapted your fitness routines to stay active? Have you done any good virtual challenges? Please send stories, race reports, photographs, artwork and even jokes to THE STREAK  to be included in the next issue.

Due to the continuing public health threat of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Annapolis Striders has made the decision to cancel the 2020 Annapolis 10 Mile Run. Although we have not opened registration for the 2020 event, there are some runners that deferred from 2019 to 2020 and we will provide registration details for those deferred runners later.
We have made the decision to cancel after careful deliberation, knowing that our foremost responsibility is to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our participants, our volunteers, our broader running community, and society at large. The current situation in the United States and throughout the world is one of disruption and uncertainty. We feel that moving forward with plans for a 4,000 person race is not aligned with what our government, medical experts, and society is asking us to do. While painful to do knowing the legacy that surrounds this event, we feel it is the responsible action to take in light of what is going on in the world around us.
We thank you for your patience and kindness during this difficult period. We hope you all remain safe and healthy and we look forward to gathering with you in Annapolis in August 2021.

Runners,

While we received positive feedback from the Navy about the use of Greenbury Point for the Endless Summer 6 Hour Run, they unfortunately will not be able to start looking at opening the facility until July.

While the details haven’t been ironed out yet, Endless Summer 6 Hour Run will explore switching to a virtual race run on the existing course. Please go to the  Endless Summer Facebook page or the Annapolis Striders webpage for more information.

Are you running a marathon this fall?

Although we are not currently able to offer training, as the group of 100+ that would register far exceeds the allowable maximum, you should be out there running. It takes 18 weeks to properly train for a marathon and you need a base of 10 miles at the start. If you are running Baltimore or Marine Corps, your training should start the week of June 15th.
Fingers crossed that the races are held.

Fellow Striders, in light of the continuing social distancing, the Annapolis Striders Board has decided to cancel the upcoming All Comers Track Meets (June 10th, 17th & 24th), the Dawson’s Father’s Day 10k (June 21st) and the Women’s Distance Festival/Run after the Women 5k (July 11th). It was not an easy decision to make. There were a number of factors that led us to this decision but the most important was the safety of the runners and the volunteers. We will continue to reevaluate and update members on the status of future events as the situation evolves and we receive more guidance from public health officials and local government.

endless summer run

The Endless Summer 6 Hour Run is currently planned for July 25th, and we realize there is a high probability that the constraints, in dealing with COVID-19, will remain in effect come race day.  Previously, we set a deadline of no later than May 30, 2020, for a final determination for the 10th annual event.  Based on the information we receive from the Navy, we may push that deadline back a few weeks.

Provided below are possible courses of action we are evaluating:

  • Continue with the event as-is with modifications to the course such as removing the out and back portion of the first loop.
  • Postpone the event for a later date.
  • Continue the event in a virtual format to be determined.
  • Cancel the 2020 event and issue refunds or deferments, or donate entry fees to the Semper Fi Fund.
Currently, we have closed registration but have opened up the wait-list.  This means that if you are not already registered, and are thinking about signing up, you can put your name on the wait-list at no cost to you.  If the race is canceled, you will not have spent any money.  If the race is able to proceed, you will receive an email being invited to complete registration at that time.

All proceeds go directly to community charities by way of Crofton Kiwanis.

SPECIAL NOTICE:Annapolis Ten Mile Run

red strider logo
